Boesmanskrans Hiking Trail: Rock Art, Waterfalls and Mountain Pools Near Clarens

By Clarens

The Boesmanskrans Hiking Trail is a rewarding full-day adventure through the mountain landscape outside Clarens, combining San rock art, a waterfall and inviting natural pools. This approximately 14km route is ideal for hikers who enjoy wild scenery, indigenous vegetation and a satisfying challenge.

Set on a working farm roughly 15km from Clarens on the Fouriesburg road, Boesmanskrans offers a more secluded side of the Eastern Free State. It is a place to slow down, follow a trail through open grassland and rocky valleys, and appreciate the stories written into the landscape over many generations. Allow between six and eight hours for the hike, depending on your pace, rest stops and how long you spend at the pools and rock art sites.

Why Boesmanskrans is special

This trail is much more than a walk with a view. Its appeal lies in the variety of experiences along the way: dramatic sandstone formations, mountain water, indigenous fynbos and the cultural significance of San rock art. The route feels wonderfully remote without being far from the village, making it an excellent choice for visitors who want a proper day in nature during a Clarens break.

The San rock art is one of the trail’s most meaningful features. These images are part of a rich heritage landscape and offer a powerful connection to the region’s earliest people. View the paintings quietly and respectfully, without touching the rock surface or attempting to enhance photographs with water, flash or other substances. The art has survived for centuries; responsible visitors help ensure it remains protected for those who come after them.

Water is another highlight. A waterfall and natural swimming pools provide welcome stops, particularly on warm Free State days. The pools are beautiful places to rest, cool off and enjoy a picnic, although conditions can vary with rainfall and season. Take care on wet rock, supervise children closely and remember that mountain water can be cold even when the day is hot.

Trail distance, timing and difficulty

The Boesmanskrans route is approximately 14km and generally takes six to eight hours to complete. It is best approached as a full-day hike rather than a quick outing. While the distance may sound manageable to regular walkers, the uneven terrain, inclines, changing weather and time spent exploring can make the day feel longer than the kilometre count suggests.

Expect a moderate to challenging hike, especially for people who are new to mountain walking or who are not used to spending several hours on their feet. The trail includes natural surfaces, rocky sections and climbs that require steady footing. A reasonable level of fitness, supportive footwear and a willingness to take your time will make the experience far more enjoyable. It is not the ideal choice for visitors seeking an easy village stroll, but it is a memorable option for active families with capable older children, groups of friends and experienced hikers.

Start early, particularly in summer, to allow plenty of daylight and to avoid walking the toughest sections in the heat. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Free State summer rainfall season, while winter days can be crisp and clear but much colder in the early morning and late afternoon. Check local conditions before setting out and be prepared to adjust your plans if rain, mist or severe weather is expected.

What to pack for the day

Good preparation is essential for a comfortable Boesmanskrans hike. There are no village-style conveniences along the route, so carry what you need and take all litter home with you. Water, sun protection and layers are particularly important in this high-altitude region, where the weather can shift quickly.

  • Comfortable hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip
  • Enough drinking water for a full day, plus extra on hot days
  • A packed lunch, energy-rich snacks and something salty
  • A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A warm layer and lightweight rain jacket, even in summer
  • A swimsuit and small towel if you plan to enjoy the pools
  • A basic first-aid kit, personal medication and blister plasters
  • A fully charged phone, offline map or route information, and a power bank
  • A reusable bag for carrying out every piece of litter

It is also wise to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Hike with companions where possible, stay on the established route and do not rely on mobile signal in remote sections.

Stay overnight on the farm

One of the great advantages of hiking at Boesmanskrans is the opportunity to stay overnight in chalet accommodation on the farm. This allows you to turn a demanding day hike into an unhurried country escape. Arrive the afternoon before, settle into the quiet, enjoy the stars and begin the trail rested the next morning. After the hike, there is no need to rush back to Clarens; you can simply put your feet up and enjoy the peace of the surrounding mountains.

The farm setting suits visitors looking for a genuine rural retreat, whether you are travelling as a couple, family or small group of hiking friends. Availability can vary, especially over weekends, school holidays and popular Clarens event periods, so it is sensible to arrange accommodation and trail access in advance.

Dogs and responsible trail etiquette

Dogs are welcome on the Boesmanskrans Hiking Trail when kept on a leash. This makes it a lovely option for visitors who do not want to leave a four-legged companion behind. Bring sufficient water for your dog, be mindful of hot surfaces and fatigue, and always clean up after them. Keeping dogs leashed protects wildlife, livestock and other hikers, while also helping everyone enjoy the farm environment safely.

As with all outdoor experiences near Clarens, leave no trace. Respect gates, signage and farm rules, avoid disturbing animals, and take only photographs. Boesmanskrans rewards considerate hikers with one of the area’s most distinctive days out: a journey through sandstone country where natural beauty, cool mountain water and ancient human history meet.
