Mountain Biking in Clarens

Clarens has established itself as one of South Africa's premier mountain biking destinations, with an extensive trail network managed by the Clarens Village Conservancy (CVC) complemented by additional private farm trails accessible through Clarens Xtreme. The terrain — sandstone ridges, river valleys, Kloof Dam and the rolling farmland of the Eastern Free State highlands — offers riding that is both technically rewarding and scenically breathtaking. Trails are graded 1 to 3 for difficulty, with clearly waymarked routes ranging from gentle dam-side circuits to challenging singletrack through exposed sandstone terrain. The Kloof Dam Circuit is perfect for newcomers and families — a mostly-level scenic loop along the dam edge. The Sandstone Contour trail follows dramatic exposed rock with panoramic views of the Maluti Mountains. Advanced riders can access more challenging farm terrain through the CVC network. A CVC permit is required for all trails. Permits can be purchased at Clarens Xtreme (531 Sias Oosthuizen Street) or online at the CVC website. The main trail hub is at Kloof Dam, reached via the Hill Street CVC gate. Clarens Xtreme also rents mountain bikes if you prefer not to travel with your own. The combination of high altitude (Clarens sits at 1,900 metres), good weather and varied terrain makes this destination popular with competitive cyclists and leisure riders alike. A growing events calendar — including the annual Clarens Berg & Bush MTB race — has placed Clarens firmly on the South African mountain biking map.
