The Clarens Golf & Leisure Estate ranks among South Africa's most beautiful and distinctive golf courses. Situated in the valley just outside Clarens village, at an elevation of 1,818 metres above sea level — making it the second-highest 18-hole championship course in South Africa — every hole offers views of the surrounding Maluti Mountains, golden sandstone cliffs and the indigenous bush of the Golden Gate highlands. Designed by Golf Data (Sean Quinn), the course is built around the concept of "risk and reward": wide landing areas encourage aggressive play from the tee, while water-hugging greens and the ever-present river demand precision on approach. All 18 holes meander along and across a tranquil river, with cascading waterfalls and natural dams coming into play on multiple holes. Mature Willow and Lombardy Poplar trees frame the fairways, creating a parkland character unique in the Free State. The course plays to a Par 71 on Kikuyu fairways with pristine Bent grass greens. At altitude, the ball flies further than at sea level — typically adding 5–8% to your carry distance — which makes club selection an interesting variable. Morning tee times are particularly sought after, when the sandstone mountains catch the early light and the valley is quiet except for birdsong. A full-service clubhouse, professional pro shop and equipment hire are available. The estate also offers residential and holiday accommodation within the development. Tee time bookings are essential on weekends and during peak holiday season.
