South Africa Heritage tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry.And World heritage sites place the country that they’re in on top due to either their natural, cultural and historic significance.

Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park (Lesotho and Kwa Zulu Natal (KZN)

It features outstanding natural beauty, Africa’s highest mountain range south of Kilimanjaro, and the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa.

Isimangaliso Wetland Park (KZN)

It features a variety of landforms including coral reefs, long sandy beaches, coastal dunes, lake systems, swamps and wetland. The park has been noted for its exceptional biodiversity including some 521 bird species.

The Cape Floral region (Eastern and Western Cape)

Is a protected area that is among the richest in plant life worldwide, containing nearly 20% of Africa’s total flora.

Robben Island (Table Bay, Cape Town)

Between the 17th and 20th centuries the island was used as a prison, including for political prisoners, such as Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of SA, imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in jail. The island has since become a symbol of the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression.

Vredefort Dome

The oldest and largest impact structure which was formed more than 2 billion years ago, when an asteroid of about 10km in diameter collided with earth at a speed of 30 000km/h.

The Cradle of the Humankind (Gauteng)

Is Fossil Hominid Sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Environs. The areas contain traces of human occupation and evolution, dating back 3.5million years.

Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape (Northern Cape) It covers 160 000 hectares of dramatic mountainous desert in the north-west part of South Africa.

Mapungubwe National Park (Limpopo)

Is an ideal location for anyone interested in the park’s wildlife and birds. It was SA’s first kingdom, and developed into the subcontinent’s largest realm, lasting for 400 years before it was abandoned in the 14th century.
