Angel’s Wing Trail

On this hike in Clarens, you definitely have angels with you as there’s nothing difficult to that extreme about it. I would say it’s the hiking version of going glamping. It’s definitely not considered the most challenging hikes around town but is definitely popular for its great weekend break away from the city.

As for starters, you leave your vehicle at the secure parking lot that’s well signposted off the R712 Golden Gate Road. You’re then collected and transported up the mountain in a 4×4 vehicle to the Ouma’s Kraal overnight hut. The hut is equipped with basic facilities including ablutions.

And this is where the main hike starts and ends at this well-kitted out overnight hut under a sandstone overhang – Ouma’s Kraal. And also that during the main hike hikers have the freedom from having to carry laden backpacks on the main hike. Oh fancy.

Also to add to the leisure part of the hike, bear in mind that on day one there’s no hiking, as you’re just enjoying the surroundings. Day two is when the main hike is and it’s a gentle 11.5 km hike up through and under colorful sandstone formations, interspersed by waterfalls, across gurgling mountain streams and rock pools. The total ascent from Ouma’s Kraal is only 300m.

Here you’ll still be able to enjoy 360 mountain views of the Maluti, Golden Gate National Park, Rooiberge, Witteberg Ranges, and the Drakensberg in the far north-east. And then the day ends with a refreshing dip in a big clear rock pool near the hut and a braai at the Lapa.

While day three is an 8km hike back down to the farm, where you are invited to stay for a braai and picnic.
