The small quaint town of Clarens, found on the Eastern part of the Free State, don’t be fooled by the country demeanor as there’s lots to do in the mountainous village. Just 8 kilometres from the small town’s hub of Clarens is Bokpoort Mountain Biking Trail. Keep yourself occupied with this ideal extreme sport that’s suitable for the adventurous kind.
As this 12-kilometer trail takes about three hours to complete and is rated as being an intermediate to difficult level. This means that it requires considerable strength and fitness and is not appropriate for beginners or children.
It’s a technical loop trail, consisting of about four loops. Some of the trail includes rock pools and waterfalls, through which it’s sometimes necessary to climb off the bicycle and push it, rather than cycle. The activities that take place in and amongst the town’s famous and majestic Maluti Mountain that this ‘jewel’ of a town is known for. Bokpoort Mountain Biking Trail is nestled within these surrounds.

During your time on some of the mountain biking trails, you might come across an opportunity for game viewing. Look out for a range of antelope species, like blesbok, mountain reedbuck and black wildebeest. The mountains and valleys are the perfect habitat of choice for a number of stunning bird species.
Thanks to the local farmers of the Clarens area, they have made some mountain biking routes available to cyclists like yourself. This amazing initiative will give you hours of fun for a relatively low trail fee, that goes back to the farmers supporting this initiative. Additionally these trails have a safe base from where you can park and ride during the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Village Loop, this is a 11 – 25km loop in and around the village of Clarens, showing off some amazing sights of nature. Worth the while for a quick trip during the day. For the more hardened mountain bikers looking for a challenge, the Game Farm and Toekka trails are around 30 – 40km’s of pure joy. They offer some gravel trails for the technical riding enthusiasts. If you really want to test your steel, then the BlouKruin mountain biking trails if for you! This trail is quite a steep track that will take you over the land area of 6 adjacent farms and a total of 800m in uphill and downhills – now that’s a lot of hills! 🙂
