South Africa is blessed with a beautiful and stretched coastal line. The country’s beach and coastline stretches for about 3,000 km.The need to preserve and protect the coastline has always been a priority for the Government. Apart from the factor of protection, history has recorded a number of life changing events that have occurred along the coast. One of these in question is The Men of the Mendi.
The Men of the Mendi is derived from a huge maritime historical event. In January 1917 during the first World War, the greatest maritime disaster in the South African history took place when the SS Mendi sank. More than 800 South African soldiers most of them Black tribesmen drowned.
A recognised and accomplished writer in the name of Brenda Shepherd took interest in the event and made a study of these events. The result of this study is a very informative book which she gladly shares with members of the public. On June 29th from 6.30 pm to 7.00 pm at the Methodist church hall in Clarens, Brenda will once again take to the podium to share this very informative and insightful book.
