The quite beautiful town of Clarens in the Free State province is geographically set on a landscape which is mountainous with many hills in the area. It is therefore not surprising that one of the most loved social activities around this area and which continues to attract thousands of people is hiking.The hiking trails around Clarens are well marked and easily accessible. While there is no entry fee for hikers, mountain bikers though are required to get biking permits from Clarens Extreme. Below are some of the hiking trails worth sampling and experiencing when you visit or pass through the town of Clarens.

Titanic Walk – Stretching over 2km, this is an easy walk and highly recommended for inexperienced hikers. It provides good views of Titanic and other surrounding areas.

Porcupine Trail – If you are such a lover of sandstone outcrops and overhangs, open grassland and a wide variety of birdlife, then this 3.5km trail connecting Leucosidea and Kloof Mountain is the one for you.

Spruit Walk – Lombardy poplar and cypress plantations cover this path from the Clarens Spruit through the ouhout scrub forest all the way to the Kloof dam.

Mallen Walk – This is a recommended trail walk for day visitors because it only involves some initial climbing followed by an almost level contour path.This trail joins both the Kloof Mountain Trail and the Spruit walk.

Leucosidea Trail – This trail is awash with spring and summer flowering plants. At a distance of 2.2km, it goes past the Kloof dam and surrounding areas.

Kloof Dam Walk – Made popular by its fishing and swimming activities, this 1.2km trail walk goes past the dam where there is a pretty waterfall in summer seasons.

Scilla Walk -This unique name originates from the blue flowering Scilla which is part of the protected species found in parts of the nearby nature reserve.

Kloof Mountain Trail – Measuring about 3.4km, this trail has some initial climbing involved but the path across the summit is relatively easy whilst the lower contour path is slightly more challenging. In Addition, it provides for some stunning and rare views.

Other hiking venues around Clarens worth considering is the Mount Horeb, Rebellie Game Farm, St Fort, Bokpoort, Schaapplaats, Golden Gate Highlands National Park and Sentinel or Tugela Falls Hike. With the above listed trails, you will fall in love with hiking and adventure all over again.
